Chapter ten
Desmond arrived, via pod, to the block terminal, ten minutes ago. There was no way in hell that he was coming here in his own transport, just in case the old man took it off him. Desmond didn't think he'd be able to handle such a loss. It was akin to dad cutting off his right leg, or losing his man-cave.
Climbing out of that pod had to be one of the most difficult decisions he had ever made. The temptation to seal those door and head straight back to his man-cave proved almost overwhelming. It's only his self-preservation which stopped him from doing just that. Why delay the inevitable? Running away would only make the situation ten times worse. It's not like he'd be able to just disappear. His father practically owned everything Desmond owned, including the deeds to his man-cave.
âThough I walk in the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil.â Desmond had no idea where he'd heard those words from but they did fit his current situation. He climbed out of the pod, swallowed his creeping terror and headed towards the reception desk. The young woman behind the desk gave him a sunny smile, showing off her sparkling white teeth. She obviously believed them to be her best feature but her grinning features only reminded Desmond of a ravenous shark. He did not dare get too close to the desk in case she bit off his arm.
âGood morning, young sir,â she said. âAre you here to see your father?â
Of course, he was here to see his father. The patronising cow. What other reason would he have to come to this featureless bland hell-hole? Not that Desmond dare say any of that. He just nodded instead, not trusting himself to speak. He couldn't remember her name. Why could he not remember? More to the point, why did it even matter? She'd be gone soon anyway. His dad never kept a personal associate for more than a few months.
âHe's in a meeting at the moment but he should be free to see you shortly. Why don't you make your way upstairs and I'll tell him that you have arrived?â
Desmond gave the young woman the briefest of nods then followed the thick red line painted along the bright green corridor. The security doors all swung open automatically after they scanned his implant ID, allowing him to walk straight through the guts of the most secure building in the world with no delays. He passed a few employees who were not so privileged. Two were being frisked by security while another was arguing with one of the security doors who politely informed the irate man that he did not have clearance to enter this area due to the man's supervisor downgrading his level from code red to code orange.
Oh dear. The poor little man. Desmond so wanted to grab this fool by the lapels and punch him right in the face. Like he had problems? A colour downgrade was nothing compared to the worrying fate which lay ahead for him.
